When and how to cancel your health insurance
Last updated: July 2026You can switch your basic insurance (mandatory health care insurance, KVG/LAMal) each year with effect from year-end. What matters is that your written cancellation reaches your current insurer by the last working day of November at the latest – it is the receipt that counts, not the postmark. The switch only becomes effective once the new basic insurer has confirmed cover, so it is best to cancel only after your acceptance by the new insurer is settled.
Supplementary insurance (VVG, e.g. hospital or dental) follows its own rules: the deadlines in the relevant policy apply, often three months to the end of the calendar year. Check your policy conditions, because supplementary cover cannot always be cancelled at the same time as the basic insurance. As deadlines are often decisive, an insured method of sending with proof is recommended.

Do I need a new insurer already?
