Tax-return deadline extension: how it works

Last updated: July 2026

If you cannot file the tax return on time, an extension can be requested in most cantons. The request must usually be made before the ordinary filing deadline expires. Many cantons offer the extension online, by phone or in writing; the maximum duration and any fees vary by canton.

In the request, state your tax or register number, name, address, the tax year and the desired new filing date. A reason is often not mandatory but may be required. Submit the request in good time, as a late request is usually no longer considered.

Recommended shipping method

Because the request must arrive on time, we recommend fast sending by A-Post or – for proof – by registered mail (from CHF 8.99). Check whether your canton also offers the extension online, which is often faster. This is a recommendation.

This information is provided as drafting help only and does not constitute legal advice. Deadlines and formal requirements can vary by contract, policy or canton – if in doubt, check with the relevant body.
