Terminating a flat early: how it works
Last updated: July 2026If you want to move out before the next termination date, you can terminate outside the ordinary date. You are usually released from the lease if you propose to the landlord an acceptable and solvent replacement tenant who takes over the lease on the same terms. Otherwise you generally remain liable until the next ordinary termination date.
In the letter, state the desired move-out date and note that you are providing or looking for a replacement tenant. To prove the report and the date, sending with proof is sensible. Also clarify the handover arrangements early.
