Cancelling a credit card: steps and notes
Last updated: July 2026Credit cards can usually be cancelled at any time, but it is often sensible to time the cancellation to the end of the paid annual-fee period so you don't pay the fee twice. Check your issuer's exact terms. Before cancelling, the balance should be cleared and any rebates or bonus points redeemed.
Think of recurring payments (subscriptions, insurance) that run via the card and set up a new payment method there in good time. In the letter, state your name, the card number (or last digits) and the desired cancellation date. Only destroy the card after the cancellation is confirmed.
Recommended shipping method
So you can prove the cancellation of your card, we recommend registered mail (from CHF 8.99) or A-Post Plus with tracking. Keep the issuer's cancellation confirmation. This is a recommendation.
