When and how to cancel your health insurance
Last updated: August 2026Basic insurance (KVG/LAMal): your written cancellation must reach your current insurer by 30 November – it is the receipt that counts, not the postmark. Because the insurer must announce next year's premium by 31 October at the latest, this deadline is open to you whenever the premium changes, regardless of deductible and model. A mid-year switch on 1 July (notice by 31 March) is only available with the ordinary deductible and free choice of doctor – not with a higher deductible or in a restricted model such as HMO, family doctor or telemedicine.
Supplementary insurance (VVG, e.g. hospital or dental) follows its own rules: the deadlines in the relevant policy apply, often three months to the end of the calendar year. Check your policy conditions, because supplementary cover cannot always be cancelled at the same time as the basic insurance. Also note: the old policy only ends once the new insurer notifies the old one that you are covered without interruption, and anyone with unpaid premiums, cost shares, default interest or debt-collection costs cannot switch basic insurer.
Recommended shipping type
Because timely receipt is what counts for a health-insurance cancellation, we recommend sending by registered mail (from CHF 8.99). You then get an item number and proof of posting at Swiss Post. The Federal Office of Public Health advises sending the cancellation by mid-November as registered mail or A-Post Plus. This is a recommendation, not a legal obligation.
This information is provided as drafting help only and does not constitute legal advice. Deadlines and formal requirements can vary by contract, policy or canton – if in doubt, check with the relevant body.

Common questions
By when do I have to cancel my health insurance?
For the mandatory basic insurance, the cancellation must reach the insurer by 30 November so the switch takes effect on 1 January. Receipt counts, not the postmark.
Can I cancel health insurance by email?
Basic insurance is cancelled in writing. Some insurers additionally accept a signed cancellation as a PDF by email or through their customer portal – their website states whether yours does. Only registered mail lets you prove timely receipt.
Where do I send the cancellation?
To your insurer's cancellation or correspondence address; if your insurer works through agencies, the address on your policy applies. The published addresses of the large Swiss insurers are in our cancellation-address directory.
Can I cancel basic and supplementary insurance together?
Not always. Supplementary insurance (VVG) has its own deadlines per policy, often three months to year-end. Check your policy conditions separately. A separate template exists for supplementary insurance.
Do I need a new insurer already?
The old policy only ends once the new insurer notifies the old one that you are covered without interruption. So settle acceptance before cancelling – in basic insurance, acceptance is mandatory.
What does sending via SwissDocs24 cost?
From CHF 2.49 per letter, including printing, envelope and postage. For the recommended registered mail from CHF 8.99. No password is required.
