Cancelling car insurance: notice and date
Last updated: August 2026Under Art. 35a of the Insurance Contract Act (VVG), an insurance contract can be cancelled to the end of the third or any following year, observing a period of three months and in writing or in another form that allows proof by text. The parties may agree that the contract can be cancelled before the end of the third year; the periods then have to be the same for both sides. Many policies run on an insurance year that does not match the calendar year, so check the expiry date on your policy first and count three months back.
State your policy number, the vehicle's licence plate and the contract end you want. Ask at the same time for confirmation of the contract end and for a claims history statement: the new insurer usually needs it for your rating. Besides ordinary cancellation, the VVG provides for extraordinary cancellation for good cause (Art. 35b) and a right to cancel after a claim. Selling or de-registering the vehicle follows its own rules depending on the policy; clarify that case directly with the insurer.
Recommended shipping method
Because the notice period is three months and receipt by the insurer is what counts, we recommend registered mail (from CHF 8.99) or A-Post Plus with tracking. That lets you prove the cancellation arrived in time. This is a recommendation.

Common questions
When can I cancel my car insurance?
Under Art. 35a VVG to the end of the third or any following contract year, with three months' notice. If the policy allows cancelling earlier, that applies.
How long is the notice period?
The VVG states three months. What matters is that the cancellation reaches the insurer before the deadline.
Does the cancellation have to be in writing?
Art. 35a VVG requires written form or another form that allows proof by text. A letter satisfies that and can also be proven.
Can I cancel after a claim?
The VVG provides for a right to cancel after a claim. Whether and how it applies to you depends on the policy; check it or ask the insurer.
What happens when I sell or de-register the vehicle?
Its own rules apply depending on the policy. Clarify that case with the insurer before cancelling.
How should I send the cancellation?
We recommend registered mail (from CHF 8.99) or A-Post Plus as proof. Simple sending is possible from CHF 2.49.
