Cancelling supplementary insurance: deadline and difference to basic insurance

Last updated: August 2026

Supplementary insurance is governed by the Insurance Contract Act (VVG) – not by the KVG. The statutory basic-insurance deadline (received by 30 November) does NOT apply here. Your policy is what counts: many policies provide for ordinary cancellation with three months' notice to the end of the calendar or contract year. Independently of that, Art. 35a VVG allows cancellation to the end of the third or any following contract year, also with three months' notice. So first check the date and notice period in your policy conditions and count back.

The biggest difference to basic insurance: for supplementary cover there is no obligation to accept you. The new provider assesses your health and can decline you or accept you only with exclusions. Therefore cancel your current supplementary cover only once the new provider has confirmed acceptance in writing – otherwise you risk a coverage gap that is hard to close later. State in the letter the products you are cancelling, your insured or policy number and your date of birth, and ask for written confirmation. The basic insurance is a separate letter with its own deadline.

Recommended shipping method

Because the notice period has to be met and receipt by the insurer is what counts, we recommend registered mail (from CHF 8.99) or A-Post Plus with tracking. That lets you prove the cancellation arrived in time. This is a recommendation, not a legal obligation.

This information is provided as drafting help only and does not constitute legal advice. Deadlines and formal requirements can vary by contract, policy or canton – if in doubt, check with the relevant body.

Common questions

By when can I cancel my supplementary insurance?

Your policy is what counts: often three months' notice to the end of the calendar or contract year. Independently of that, Art. 35a VVG allows cancellation to the end of the third or any following contract year, with three months' notice.

Does the 30 November health-insurance deadline also apply to supplementary cover?

No. The 30 November deadline only applies to the basic insurance (KVG). Supplementary insurance is governed by the VVG with its own, often longer deadlines per policy.

Should I settle the new provider first?

Yes, absolutely. Supplementary insurance involves a health questionnaire and no obligation to accept – the new provider can decline you. Only cancel once acceptance is confirmed in writing, otherwise you risk a coverage gap.

Does this letter also cancel my basic insurance?

No. The letter cancels only the supplementary products listed. For the basic insurance (KVG) there is a separate template with the statutory deadline (received by 30 November).

Can I cancel only some of my supplementary products?

Yes. List exactly the products you want to cancel in the letter – products not listed continue. Basic and supplementary insurance can also be with different providers.

How should I send the cancellation?

We recommend registered mail (from CHF 8.99) or A-Post Plus as proof. Simple sending is possible from CHF 2.49.
