How to address a letter in Switzerland

Last updated: July 2026

On a Swiss letter the recipient address goes bottom right on the envelope or in the address window: name, street with number, then postcode and town on one line (e.g. “3000 Bern”). The sender goes top left. At SwissDocs24 you simply enter the address in the form – the cover page with the correct address window is generated automatically.

Which address goes where?

On a standard envelope the sender is top left and the recipient address bottom right. With window envelopes the address shows through the window – so it must sit in the right place in the document. Avoid extra lines or graphics in the address block so the post can read it automatically.

Structure of the recipient address (Switzerland):

LineContent
1Salutation and name (e.g. Mr Max Muster) or company
2optional addition (c/o, department)
3Street and house number
4Postcode and town (e.g. 3000 Bern)
5Country only for sending abroad

Window envelope and address window

With a window envelope the address block must be positioned so it is fully visible in the window – without other text showing through. Keep enough white space around the address.

At SwissDocs24 you don’t have to work this out: you enter the recipient address in the form and we automatically generate a cover page where the address sits correctly in the window area. Your actual document is placed behind it.

Avoiding common mistakes

Avoid a missing or wrong postcode, swapped sender/recipient fields and an overcrowded address block. Check the name and town for typos, as an unclear address delays delivery.

In the live preview you see exactly how the address and cover page look before payment and can correct them if needed.

These notes are for practical orientation. For delivery, Swiss Post’s information and requirements are authoritative.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the recipient address go in Switzerland?

In the bottom-right field of the envelope or in the address window. At SwissDocs24 it is placed there automatically.

How do I write the postcode and town?

Postcode and town go together on one line, postcode before the town, e.g. “3000 Bern”. No comma between them.

Do I have to state the country?

Only when sending abroad. For domestic Swiss mail, the name, street and postcode with town are enough.

How does the window envelope work?

The recipient address shows through the window. SwissDocs24 automatically creates a cover page where the address sits correctly in the window area.

Do I have to format the address myself?

No. You enter the address in the form; we place it to standard on the cover page. Sending starts from CHF 2.49.
